CALL FOR LETTERS OF INTENT (LOI)

UCLA K12 Child Health Research Center Development Award (CHRCDA)

LOI SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 17, 2012

Full applications will be requested from selected finalists on October 15, 2012

We are pleased to announce the UCLA K12 CHRCDA grant was recently renewed for another five years. We will continue to support four scholars a year who will receive $98,000/yr each.
Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Candidates must hold an MD or MD, PHD, degree and have completed a pediatric residency and a subspecialty fellowship.
  2. Candidates may either
    1. Hold a full time faculty appointment at the Department of Pediatrics at UCLA and be within four years of completing their most recent fellowship training or
    2. Be fellows in their third year of subspecialty training providing they have a commitment from their division chief to be appointed as junior faculty at the completion of fellowship.
    3. Be current CHRCDA scholars applying for an additional year of funding
  3. Candidates must have a commitment from their division chief promising >75% dedicated protected time towards the research project.
  4. Candidates should not hold an R- or K- award or equivalent NIH funding at the time of application.
  5. Must have future plans of an academic career and of submitting extra-mural grant applications.
  6. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  7. Applicants must identify a mentor who either:
    1. Is a member of the UCLA K12-CHRCDA grant mentor group.
    2. An NIH-funded scientist with a lab that performs basic or translational research who has an interest in pediatric science and wants to join the UCLA K12-CHRCDA grant mentor group.
  8. The applications must have a basic or translational focus in any area relevant to child health and disease. Purely clinical research projects will not be approved.
Application Process:

A single PDF file of the letter of intent should be emailed to Marilynn VanderHule (mvanderhule@mednet.ucla.edu ) before September 17, 2012 with the following:

  • The name, academic title, and division of the candidate.
  • The name of the proposed mentor.
  • The title of the proposed project.
  • One paragraph describing the problem that will be addressed by the grant, the key hypothesis, and the major research aims.
  • NIH-biosketches of the candidate and mentor.

    Requests for full applications will be sent to successful applicants in October.
    For successful continuation applicants, a progress report will be required at the time of full application.
