Letter from the Program Director
Greetings!
Welcome to our UCLA Combined
Residency Program in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) website. You
will be able to find information on our curriculum, rotation sites, sample
schedules, and more as you navigate through the site.
We established our program in
2003 and have successfully matched every position offered since then. We use
the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS) and participate in the
National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Each year we offer four intern
positions.
The UCLA Med-Peds program was
created with much thought and discussion between the Departments of Medicine and
Pediatrics. The Chairmen and Program Directors in both departments have pledged
their support for this joint endeavor in residency training. The UCLA Med-Peds
curriculum was devised with the goal of providing balanced, comprehensive
educational experiences in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Furthermore,
we have an Advisory Board comprised of med-peds faculty who oversee the
curriculum and all aspects of the program.
While the Med-Peds program
may be relatively new, the excellence of residency training at UCLA has been
long established. Both categorical Medicine and Pediatrics residency programs
at UCLA have had a track record of producing high-quality physicians. These
graduates go on to practice primary care, enter competitive subspecialty
fellowship positions, or stay in the academic setting with research interests in
public health, health services research, medical education, or the basic
sciences.
The UCLA Medical Center has
been named “Best Hospital in the West” for more than fifteen years by the U.S.
News & World Report survey, with top 20 rankings in pediatrics, oncology,
gastroenterology, cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, pulmonology, and
rheumatology. UCLA has also ranked 1st in geriatrics for more than a
decade. Our excellence in patient care and research translates into outstanding
training opportunities for residents. In addition, construction is underway for
two new replacement hospitals, one on the Westwood campus and one on the Santa
Monica-UCLA campus. Both of these new facilities will boast the latest in
medical technology and health care delivery systems.
Finally, Los Angeles is a
vibrant city in which to reside on the West Coast. The population is
wonderfully culturally diverse, with a mix of peoples and languages from many
ethnicities. The region is also geographically varied,
where one can surf, ski and snowboard,
and blaze a trail through the desert, all in the same day. Best of all, the Los
Angeles area averages 329 days of sunshine each year.
Thank you
for taking the time to learn more about our program and considering it for your
residency training needs!
Sincerely,
Alice Kuo, MD, PhD, MEd
Program Director
