A Statement on
Resident Duty Hours
The Accreditation
Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors approved
institutional standards for resident duty hours in February 2003, to be
implemented by July 2003.
Here at UCLA, we have
taken this charge very seriously. Resident well-being has been a priority
not only for the program directors of both internal medicine and
pediatrics but also the Dean of Graduate Medical Education.
We are happy to report
that previous to the ACGME statement, in both pediatrics and internal
medicine, we were very close to compliance with the policy. However, the
following changes in particular were implemented to ensure full
compliance:
Internal
Medicine
In January 2003, teams
of residents were formed to evaluate each rotation for compliance with the
ACGME policy. A particular focus was on the intern year. In April 2003,
pilots of the new schedules were put into effect, and the entire
curriculum was in compliance by June 2003.
