Jan H. Tillisch, MD
Executive Vice Chair,
Department of Medicine
I enthusiastically and
strongly support the establishment of a combined Medicine-Pediatric Residency
Program at UCLA. The development of such a program will give a greater number
of options and potential for development of residents who have interest in both
specialties of medicine and will result in furthering interrelationship between
the two Departments. We have several faculty members in the Department of
Medicine who have double boards in Medicine and Pediatrics and their practices
are a great benefit to us educationally as well as giving us another option for
attracting patients.
The Department of Medicine
has a great interest in illnesses which transition from pediatrics to adult
medicine and the opportunity to strengthen our clinical training in this area is
very attractive, particularly in adult congenital heart disease, various
rheumatic diseases and pulmonary diseases. There is a strong interrelationship
between pediatrics and adult medicine in the care of these patients and in
potential research opportunities in these disease states. I see the development
of a combined Medicine-Pediatric Training Program as important to subserve these
areas of interest.
The continued growth of the
patient population served by the Department of Medicine (approximately 15-20%
per year over the last five years) as well as our continued growth in faculty
will provide abundant patient and faculty resources to subserve this type of
combined program. I know the strength of the Department of Pediatrics in
research and patient care and the emphasis on subspecialty training will be
important attributes to such a combined program. The Department of Medicine and
the Internal Medicine Training Program are committed to this effort and look
forward to its growth and success.
Sincerely,
Jan H. Tillisch, MD
