Letter from the
Residents
Dear Applicants,
We welcome your
interest in our Med-Peds program here at UCLA with great pleasure. As residents
from all three years of the new UCLA program, it is with a sense of pride and
joy that we introduce the highlights of the UCLA Med-Peds program to you. We
have participated in making a fledgling program founded just three years ago
into one of the pre-eminent Med-Peds programs in the country. UCLA has a
tradition of highly ranked and competitive Internal Medicine and Pediatric
categorical programs. Through the extreme hard work of the directors of our
program, as well as the overwhelming support of both categorical departments,
UCLA now offers a fully integrated Med-Peds program that has the best attributes
of the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency programs. Here are some of
the highlights that make UCLA Med-Peds a great program:
- Our highly
committed and enthusiastic Program Director, Alice Kuo, and Associate
Director Debra Lotstein, both of whom are Med-Peds trained physicians. They
are invaluable resources who have used their talent and expertise to make
UCLA Med-Peds program a vital and established residency program.
- Med-Peds
continuity clinics at their best:
-
Office-based practice with Drs. Grossman and Garvey for our interns
- Pico
Clinic, a well-run branch of Venice Family Clinic, the largest free
clinic system in the country, for the junior and senior residents.
- Med-Peds
Quality Improvement rotation during the 2nd year, focused on
“Improving Healthcare to the Underserved.”
- High profile
categorical Medicine and Pediatric programs with a high level of commitment
to resident education and well-being.
- Opportunities
for research in any field imaginable…from bench work to clinical trials to
community-based research. UCLA is among one of the highest funded
institutions in term of public and private research grants.
- Impressive mix
of training site centered at UCLA Center for Health Sciences, but with
diverse exposure to the LA County medical experience at Harbor-UCLA and
Olive-View Medical Centers. Residents also rotate through the Veterans
Administration Health Care system and community hospitals at Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center and UCLA-Santa Monica Hospital.
- Med-Peds
Rounds—A monthly session that the entire program meets over dinner to
discuss a relevant outpatient topic through role-play of cases.
- The sunshine,
the culturally diverse and vibrant city of Los Angeles, the beach, and… did
we forget to mention the sunshine
We look forward to
meet you and share the excitement we have for our program with you. We are a
tightly knit group of residents that work hard to not only make our mark at
UCLA, but to expand our vision and ideas nationally and internationally. We
hope to be able to share our experiences and aspirations for the UCLA Med-Peds
program with you, and what you can expect as a resident here. Please feel free
to email any of us with questions.
Sincerely,
UCLA Med-Peds
