UCLA DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS FACULTY
(Nephrology)
Division Highlights for 1997:
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology enjoyed a strong and successful year in 1997. The Casey Lee Ball Pediatric Nephrology Laboratories were dedicated in May. Here cutting-edge
research is being conducted in the clinical and basic science aspects of osteodystrophy in children and adolescents with chronic renal failure, dialysis, and kidney transplants. Equally exciting studies are being conducted with the most innovative forms of immunosuppression in pediatric renal transplantation. In the area of clinical care, the Pediatric Dialysis Program, one of the nation's largest, has recently opened a new, dedicated Pediatric Hemodialysis. The Pediatric Renal Transplantation Program performed 30 kidney transplants in 1997, making it one of the largest pediatric kidney transplant programs in the United States. Both the Kidney Transplant and Dialysis Programs continue to have benchmark clinical outcomes that are significantly superior to national pediatric registry results reported to the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study.
Finally, the education and training program of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology continues to train fellows who have been successful in academic Pediatric Nephrology. Dr. Beatriz Kuizon, a graduate of the fellowship program in June 1997, and our newest UCLA faculty member, was awarded a National Kidney Foundation Clinical Investigator Award. Dr. Alan Shapiro, a first-year fellow, was awarded a prestigious Pediatric Scientist Development Award.
