DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY

Division Highlights

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology's clinical programs in diagnostic and interventional cardiology continue to grow, serving an ever larger and more complex pediatric population with a wide variety of congenital and acquired heart conditions. Board certified pediatric cardiologists, clinical nurse specialists and social workers are tireless in research and clinical application of innovative modalities for comprehensive cardiac evaluation. Offering a wide range of treatment options, this team of outstanding medical professionals provides precise medical management, preoperative diagnosis and conscientious postoperative care resulting in clinical outcomes which are among the best in the world.

In 1999, the division engaged in a unique strategic planning initiative to optimize the research and clinical expertise of the faculty for the benefit of the children we treat. In several intensive sessions guided by an experienced independent consultant, every Pediatric Cardiology medical program was examined and reengineered toward providing better care and more usable scientific information in an increasingly challenging business environment. Pediatric Cardiology Research and Clinical Faculty then engaged the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in this dynamic process, which, on a continuing basis, is expected to significantly enhance outcomes.

During the year, Pediatric Cardiology expanded use of advanced diagnostic modalities to give children with cardiac diagnoses the finest in treatment. The neonatal echocardiography program, using state-of-technology cardiac image capture and transmission, provides real time cardiodiagnostic consultations to physicians at community hospitals. The use of high resolution imaging technology providing clear anatomic data has resulted in growth of the fetal echocardiography program, and the delivery of increasing numbers of high risk infants at UCLA.

The volume of cases in the pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology programs continues an upward trend in providing the latest catheter-directed therapies to correct anatomic cardiac defects and to cure abnormal heart rhythms. As pediatric patients from the Western U.S. and Pacific Rim, as well as other countries, come to benefit from these outstanding programs, Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA grows in recognition as a national leader in pediatric cardiac intervention.

The pediatric cardiac transplantation program continued to increase the number of children evaluated and listed for heart transplantation. As children from the world over came to UCLA to receive new hearts, the attention of the media was drawn to the high skill and accomplishments of the pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons at Mattel Children's Hospital. Along with the transplant program, giving hope to children whose hearts are failing, UCLA's Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Program is improving the cardiac health of children for whom, in years past, the only option would be transplant.

The Community Pediatric Cardiology Network, instituted by the Division in 1997, has expanded the opportunity for children in the larger community to benefit from the experience and cardiovascular research discoveries of the pediatric cardiology faculty of Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. UCLA pediatric cardiologists provide services to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, Venice Family Clinic, Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital and San Bernardino County Hospital. The full-time pediatric cardiology outreach practice in Thousand Oaks, approximately 45 miles northwest of Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA is thriving. Many pediatric cardiologists in private practice throughout the Southland and in neighboring states increasingly consult with our faculty, referring their patients to UCLA for the superior diagnostic skill and advanced treatment options the community has come to expect from Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA.
