AFFILIATES AT OLIVE VIEW MED CENTER

Division Highlights

The Department of Pediatrics at Olive View-UCLA provides inpatient, outpatient, urgent care and newborn healthcare services for infants, children and adolescents under the supervision of the Chief of Pediatrics. The Chief of Pediatrics is responsible to the Chairman, Department of Pediatrics at UCLA and Medical Director of Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. The following include the accomplishments of Pediatrics UCLA during 1999:

  1. A Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) program was established in September 1997 is now in full operation in 1999. We evaluate approximately 60 children per month as part of this program.
  2. In response to the ACGME changes in time that pediatric housestaff are allowed to rotate in neonatal intensive care settings, we have developed a new curriculum which uses an interactive format of progressively complicated neonatal problems. This was developed under the direction of Dr. Maureen Sims with the collaboration of the neonatal faculty members. Also, our newborn group has developed an updated comprehensive guideline for neonatal intensive care unit and normal nursery.
  3. Initiation and maintenance of NICU database which has served as a performance improvement tool. This resulted in a change in the delivery protocol as well as ventilatory support.
  4. Olive View-UCLA Medical Center was surveyed by JCAHO and California Medical Association in April of 1999. The Department of Pediatrics passed with an excellent score. In addition, the Department of Pediatrics had a site visit by Universal Care and they were very pleased with our performances.
  5. Respiratory Syncytial Virus Prevention Program was established. The eligible infants were given Synagis. This program has been very successful and received an award from the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission.

The Department of Pediatrics at OV-UCLA has the following goals.

  1. To provide comprehensive pediatric care.

  2. To enable the children to achieve maximum physical and mental health through preventive, curative and educational efforts.

  3. To provide to our patients level of services equal to that available in the community at large.

  4. To provide an environment for teaching pediatrics, family practice and Department of Emergency Medicine residents and medical students with particular reference to pediatrics as practiced in the community, utilizing biopsychological approaches.

  5. To promote clinical investigations to improve teaching and quality of care.

  6. To maintain comprehensive neonatal database.

  7. To provide sleep study laboratory for neonates.

  8. To initiate hearing screening for newborns.

  9. To provide protection against RSV to all eligible infants through the Synagis Program.
